Regulation on the Research Ethics Committee
of the Korean Society of Integration Medicine

Article 1 (Purpose)

The purpose of this regulation is to establish the research ethics of submitted authors concerning the paper publication of the Korean Society of Integration Medicine (KSIM) and prevent the research misconduct in advance, and prescribe the matters concerning the installation and operation of the Research Ethics Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Committee”) for fair and systematic verification on research integrity when research misconduct occurs.

Article 2 (Scope of Research Misconduct)

1. The “Research Misconduct” (hereafter referred to as the “Misconduct”) refers to forgery, falsification, plagiarism, and improper authorship in research papers as defined in each of the following Subparagraphs.
   • ① “Forgery” refers to the act of creating false materials or research results that do not exist.
   • ② "Falsification” refers to the act of distorting research details or results by manipulating the research or modifying and deleting data arbitrarily.
   • ③ “Plagiarism” refers to the act of plagiarizing the idea, research details, and results of others without their approval or citation.
   • ④ “improper authorship” refers to the act of not listing a person, who academically contributed to the research and its results, as an author without reasonable reasons or listing a person who academically did not make any contribution to the research as an author of the research.

   • ① Research of human body experiments that may incur harm to the human body from objective viewpoints
   • ② Research using disease-related personal information
   • ③ Research related to biopsy specimen of the human body
   • ④ Research that may cause other ethical problems
3. The “violation of bioethics” refers to the act of performing research that is described in the above Paragraph 2 without going through the Research Editorial Board of the affiliated institution by a researcher (first author of the paper).
   • • The “informant ” refers to those who tip off the Editorial Board of the Journal about the fact of recognizing misconduct and related evidence.
   • • The “examinee” refers to a person who is investigated concerning research misconduct, violation of bioethics, or similar acts. The examinee does not include testifiers or witnesses in the investigation process.
   • • The “preliminary investigation” refers to a procedure to determine whether an official investigation is needed for allegations of research misconduct or the violation of bioethics.
   • • The “investigation” refers to a procedure to verify whether allegations of research misconduct or the violation of bioethics are true or not.
   • • The “decision” refers to a procedure to confirm the investigation result and notify the result to the informant and examinee.

Article 3 (Composition of the Research Ethics Committee)

1. The Committee is placed in the Society to deliberate on the matters of research ethics.
2. The Committee is composed of 15 members including the Chairperson in the Editorial Board, Director for General Affairs, Director for Academic Affairs, and members of the Editorial Board.
3. The Head of the Committee is Chairperson in the Editorial Board, and the Vice Head and Secretary are elected by mutual vote.
4. The term of office of the members of the Committee shall be two years and may be reelected.

Article 4 (Operation of the Committee)

1. The Committee is convened by the Head upon the request from the President of the Society or if the Head deems it necessary.
2. The Committee is assembled when a majority of the registered members are present, and a resolution shall be passed by a two-thirds majority of the attending members. A power of attorney is accepted for the assembly of the Committee but has no right to vote.
3. The members who are involved with the research under discussion shall not participate in the deliberation in relation to the research.
4. The Head may request a senior researcher in charge of the research or researcher(s) to submit or report the required data, if necessary for deliberation.

Article 5 (Function of the Committee)

The following agendas shall be decided by the Committee.

1. Matters concerning research ethics raised by papers, planning documents, reports, etc. in relation to the Society
2. Matters concerning well-intentioned accusations raised in terms of research ethics
3. Investigation concerning research misconduct
4. Other matters concerning research ethics raised by the Head

Article 6 (Handling of the Violation of Research Ethics)

1. If allegations of the violation of research ethics in relation to the Society are charged, the Committee shall investigate and handle the charges appropriately.
2. The investigation on the violation of research ethics shall be confidential.
3. Those who are charged with the violation of research ethics have the right to raise an objection against the investigated result of the Committee, and the Committee shall guarantee this appropriately.
4. The investigated results about the violation of research ethics shall be reported to the Society, and the records shall be archived for three years after the handling is complete.
5. If the investigated result confirms the violation of research ethics, the following actions shall be taken.
   • ① Papers that violated research ethics are not allowed to be published in the Journal. Already published papers are removed from the list of the papers in the Journal and notified to related academic institutions.
   • ② Authors of papers who violated research ethics shall be prohibited to submit a paper in the Journal for at least one year or longer.

Article 7 (Responsibility and Role of Researchers)

1. (Joint research) Researchers shall set their roles and relationships clearly when performing joint research with other researchers and commit to fulfilling the responsibility. Joint researchers shall determine research goals, expected effects, role division, data collection, record, and sharing method, the decision of authorship and priority, selection of responsible researcher, and issues of intellectual property right and ownership from the research planning stage.
2. (Duty of author) Corresponding author or first author shall be responsible for the overall management of paper data, writing a paper, and authorship, and also responsible for the management and supervision of research by joint researchers.
3. (Corresponding author) Corresponding author shall be responsible for overall research results and evidence.
4. (Authorship) Authors are regarded as individuals who contribute to practical knowledge enhancement of the published research. The authorship influences educational, social, and financial impacts on the author(s).
5. (Criteria of authorship) The criteria of authorship in the Society are prescribed in the following four Sub-paragraphs, which shall all be satisfied.
   • ① Substantial contribution to making research concept and design or collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data
   • ② Preparation of research details or critical modification about important intellectual content
   • ③ Final approval of the manuscript that will be published
   • ④ Contract to take all responsibilities for the research to ensure investigation and resolution of research accuracy or integrity-related questions appropriately
6. (Indication of affiliation of the author(s)) The affiliation of the author shall be indicated at the time of performing the research such as experiments and paper writing.

Supplementary Provisions

This regulation is effective from the date of resolution at the General Meeting after approval by the Board of Directors on May 11, 2013.
